The way I train is this: I train for tomorrow. My focus is always tomorrow’s workout.
Tomorrow, I’m going to work the hardest I ever have in my life.
Tomorrow, I’m going to sweat.
Tomorrow, I’m putting it all on the line, but today I’m going to do the fundamental human movements. I’m going to do the appropriate reps, appropriate sets, appropriate load. I want to leave the gym feeling better than when I got in, because tomorrow is going to be the greatest workout of my life.
When I get to the workout tomorrow, you know what I say? Tomorrow is going to be the greatest workout of my life. I’m going to sweat, I’m going to vomit, I’m going to train.
I think that’s the best way to approach strength training, is always keeping enough in the tank that you can keep coming back over and over and over.
I have a lot of injuries from sports, and yet I’ve been training consistently since 1965. I think part of it is the fact that I’ve always thought “this is practice, but this is performance.”
