Introduction to Be Like the Best
Anthony Renna’s Introduction to his new book, Be Like the Best
“It’s said that a wise person learns from his mistakes. A wiser one learns from others’ mistakes. But the wisest person of all learns from others’ successes.” John C. Maxwell
In today’s “Age of Information,” it’s so easy to be inundated with shortcuts, tricks and schemes to “make it.” It’s simple to start following the way one person does things and then get sidetracked and change course when we see what others are doing. We get information overload and then we get paralyzed. It’s called “paralysis by analysis” and it stops us from taking action.
This book is a collection of interviews with some of the top fitness professionals in the world. I picked a mix of people from different sections of the profession—personal trainers, physical therapists, strength and conditioning coaches, gym owners, chiropractors, entrepreneurs, professors and business coaches—to gain different perspectives on the success journey.
During the last 12 years of interviewing hundreds of strength coaches, fitness professionals, physical therapists and gym owners as the founder and host of The Strength Coach Podcast as well as Strength Coach TV, I have accumulated a rolodex of “The Best of the Best” in the fitness profession.
I picked the people in this book that I not only consider to be masters of their craft, but those who are accessible. These are people who have given endless hours to not only help their clients and patients, but to other professionals they encounter at conferences, workshops, through social media and podcasts.
I love the quote, “No one cares how much you know until they know how much you care.” I have a personal relationship with every person I interviewed in this book and I can tell you it’s a group of the most caring people you’ve ever met. These are professionals who really care about making an impact in the world and in their profession.
You’ll learn how they evolved in their careers, what habits and traits they believe made them successful, their goal setting processes, how they get through hard times and even some books to read and people they recommend following.
After each interview, I have included what I call a “Be Like.”
What the heck is a “Be Like?”
It’s a challenge or action step based on a takeaway from each interview. They’re designed to encourage you to make the necessary changes and habits to Be Like the Best on your journey to dominating this profession.
For example, during the Mike Boyle interview, he said, “I believe my success coincided directly with writing and speaking.” Hence, the “Be Like Mike” challenge gives you action steps and ideas to start writing and to eventually turn that into a presentation to use to get in front of everyone you can.
While there are many takeaways in each interview, the specific “Be Like” for each person was something that stood out to me. Many of the “Be Likes” in the book come from my own experience having top-level coaches and I’ve used them with great success.
I promise you that if you pick the “Be Likes” that match an area where you need improvement or change, you’ll absolutely be on your way to being among the best in the fitness profession.
But you can’t go at this half-heartedly. When you decide you will do a “Be Like,” you have to give it everything you have, with complete focus and a commitment to stay the course.
It’s the only way you’ll make a change!
Don’t just read the interviews and not take action on what they’re suggesting. One of the biggest differences between the most successful people and those who are on the border is that the most successful people take the action steps needed.
Be Like the Best and make a commitment to yourself that you’re the kind of person who takes action…and does so immediately.
